Hey guys...well, I'm part way to Cape Town. The journey has begun. I was up til 4 and 5am every night this week pretty much just packing, gathering donations, learning new technology and setting stuff up so that I could stay in touch better.
I got a faster computer so I could deal with photos and video, a better camera and tons of hard drives and SD cards. Hopefully, fingers crossed, I'm all set.
Luckily the next week in Cape Town is still a prep period. So I'm going to start learning the new camera and computer programs and prep what the month ahead will look like. When I unpack all of the physical donations I received, I'm going to post a picture for you guys.
This is how I know the Universe is watching over this whole project and adventure. I got so many donations, I ended up having three 55-75lb bags. So I was prepared to pay for an extra bag, and luckily I had a 70lb bag allowance.
I got to the Delta check in and when we weighed the bags, one was over 80lbs and she said I'd have to redistribute some of the weight. So I started repacking stuff from one suitcase to another. Mind you, my friend had to help me zip them all up without breaking the zippers because they are literally filled to the brim.
So once I did that, I told the lady I thought I was good. After the person she was helping walked away she motioned for me to come over. The next guy in line didn't know she had called me over and walked up at the same time. The agent told him to wait and I said I was sorry but he really wanted to go ahead and didn't have any luggage and had his little boy with him. So we let him go first. Wanna know who that guy was? Owen Wilson, in the flesh. I just patiently waited to the side while he very seriously checked in.
Once he was done, the agent was back to me. Now one of my other bags was over by 4lbs. She had asked me before if I was moving there because I had so much stuff. I told her that half of the bags were donations for the animals and rangers. So, I was over again, but she kept typing. Before I knew it, she told me not to worry about being over and she waived the extra bag fee! I was so excited you have no idea!! I gave her a nice tip & thanked her profusely.
I knew the trip was off to a great start.
I was next worried about my carry-ons because my "personal item" kinda looks as big as my rolling bag. I have all of my filming equipment in addition to all of the camera trap donations and anything else electronic that we don't want to risk getting broken or stolen. So my carry-ons are VERY heavy & probably way too big.
Thank you Universe-I was able to get on the plane & settled, breathing a sigh of relief.
One more plane to go.
At the end of my flight the pilot wanted to meet me & I stayed back & talked to everyone working. I have to say...this whole Delta experience might be the best I've ever had. Everyone was so nice & they even wrote down the fundraising URL. And a HUGE THANK YOU to Delta for supporting the ban on game trophies!! I have made sure that every flight I book is not on South African Airways just for that reason. I wouldn't be surprised if I'm on a black list for them anyway. I just can't knowingly give my money to a company that is against everything I believe in. But I am hopeful that one day they will change their minds and do the right thing. Better late than never.
So here I am now, in the lounge, writing to you guys and waiting for my next flight. I look forward to sleeping & watching some good films. If I'm awake enough, I'll create more of the thank you graphics for my fundraising perks for all of you I still owe them to.
We're on the last day of the fundraiser! Please help us meet that goal. We're almost there & all of the charities who will benefit from it are over the moon. Everyone who has supported me & the animals are now my #AnimalAvengers & part of my family forever. This was my first crowdfunding attempt. I'm not gonna lie. It was a lot of work. But oh so worth it.
Okay...off to Cape Town. I will #Periscope from there on @AnimalAvengers.
Join me on this journey...it's going to be a very interesting ride.
Sending you all lots of love. United, we can save this world of ours. We're well on our way. xxx~Shannon
